On 8 February, Mr. Mohammed Nur Osman (Degaulle), the Eritrean Consul General in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, did not report to duty. Earlier in the week, the Consul General had been summoned to Eritrea. Prior to his assignment in Saudi Arabia, Mohammed Nur had been “frozen” following his designation as director within Eritrea’s sole Worker’s Union. He was reportedly sympathetic to the reform movement within the ruling party and there are now speculations that he is in the process of seeking asylum. Earlier this week, Gedab News reported on the resignation of Mr. Mohammed Burhan Abdulkader, First Secretary to Eritrea’s Embassy in Cairo, Egypt. Late last year, another official, Eritrea’s envoy to China, Ambassador Mohammed Nur Ahmed, sought and was granted asylum in Australia. In a previous issue, Gedab News had reported that it will publish the names of a colonel and a general who are now in the United States and unlikely to return after receiving confirmation. Gedab News has learned that one of the officials, Colonel Amine, has reportedly applied for and been granted asylum in the United States. Colonel Amine worked for the Eritrean Justice Department and was sent to the USA for training. Meanwhile, Colonel Mekonen (aka Barya) was killed in a car accident in Southern Eritrea. There are conflicting reports about whether the accident was benign or triggered by a landmine. |
