Genesis Of Eritrea Print E-mail
By Semere T. Habtemariam - Feb 10, 2003

In the beginning, Italy created Eritrea. Now, Eritrea was formless, and chaos and famine was over its land, but the spirit of coexistence was hovering over its waters. (That is why till this day, the Eritreans refer to themselves as "deqi Hade ruba.")

And the Italians said. "Let there be colony," and there was colony. The Italians saw that the colony was good, and they separated the colony from the darkness. Italians called the colony "Eritrea," and the darkness they called "Ethiopia, and Sudan." (Ethiopia is burned-face from Greek and Sudan is black from Arabic.) There were the Amhara/Tigrayan "zemechas" (looting and plundering) and the Dervish jihads (religious zealots and fanatics) - the first day.

And Italians said, "Let there be an expanse between the peoples to separate people from people. So Italians made the expanse and separated the people under the expanse from the people above it. And it was so. Italians called the expanse "Aryanism." There was "geza banda habesha" and there was "geza banda Tliayan" – separate and certainly unequal- the second day.

And Italians said, "Let the people under the expanse be gathered to one place and let dry ground appear." And it was so. Italians called the dry ground "Dominale," and the gathered waters they called "Principalia de piccolo Roma." And the Italians saw that it was good.

And Italians said, "Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds." Machines were brought, land was irrigated, natives were made to work like slaves. And it was so. The land produced vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds." And Italians saw that it was good. And there was the crowned jewel of the empire- the new frontier and home for daring Sicilians- the third day.

And Italians said, "Let there be divisions among the people below the expanse so the people above could have everlasting dominion. Let these divisions serve as signs to mark the inability of natives to seek independence and afford us resistance." And so it was. Italians made two great divisions: Islam to govern the lowlands and Christianity to govern the highlands. Italians made lesser divisions. Italians spread them in the lowlands and highlands. Regionalism, clanism and tribalism came to rule. And Italians saw that this was good. The natives were easily subdued and the "Askeris" proudly fought in the service of expanding the phantom empire that was neither holy, Roman or empire - the fourth day.

And Italians said, " Let Piccolo Roma teem with prosperity and commerce." So Italians built roads, constructed rails, planted telegraphs and posts and the colony was truly upgraded. And the Italians saw this was good. More Sicilians were brought and blessed to " be fruitful and increase in number." There were native women as ever and so was jungle fever - 90,000 "hanfeTs" - the fifth day.

And the Italians said, "Let the colony expand and produce more for the motherland." Askeris were recruited and sent everywhere to fight wars. Adwa, Mogadisho and Tripoli entered the vernacular vocabulary. The Askeris demonstrated great loyalty. And the Italians saw that this was good.

Then the Italians said, "Let us make Eritrea in our image, in our likeness, to be a testimony to our greatness."

So Italians created Eritrea in Rome's image,
In the image of Rome, they created her,
Nation and a state, they created her.

And it was so. Italians saw all that they had made, and it was very good, and there was morning but there was no evening. The Askeris deserted and Keren was captured. Italians had to flee as the Brits came to be.

Eritreans saw what have been made, and it was very good and not so very good. There was morning but there was no evening- the British came. The British stole what was made and showed no interest in staying. The defunct empire could only defeat a phantom empire.

The British tried to undo what was made. They exploited the greater and lesser divisions among the people and tried to slice the land into pieces and annex it to the land of  "zemechas" and Dervishes. The spirit of coexistence and unity was still hovering and "deqi Hade ruba" refused to be dismembered.

The Eritreans saw that their unity was good, but still there was no evening. The Eritreans blessed their unity and hoped to complete the nation in its entirety. They fought and fought and finally saw the beginning of evening. And the Eritreans saw this was good.

The evening was, however, short-lived by a nightmare from within. The fight goes on but victory is within reach.

The Sabbath is so near and yet so far.

At the end of the sixth day, Eritrea will be completed in its vast array.

By the seventh day, Eritreans would finish the work they had been doing; so on the seventh day they would rest from all their work. And the Eritreans would honor the seventh day and make it a national holiday, because on it they would rest from all the work of creating that they had been doing.

God bless Eritrea!!!
