Isaias Afwerki & His Musical Chair Print E-mail
By   - Aug 06, 2002

There is neither rhyme nor reason; it strikes whenever the erratic voice of Isaias tells him to move people around.  Yesterdays defense minister becomes tomorrows fish minister; todays health minister becomes tomorrows zoba governor.  Nobody, not even his closest advisors know what is next: when the mood strikes, it hits like lightening keeping everyone too disoriented to focus on the immovable chair: the one occupied by The Godfather.

***image1***What is next? For one thing, the number of the players has been reduced.  The key players were the 75 Central Committee members of the PFDJ.  Here are the 75 and a Musical Chair Predictor that tells you whether they are going up, going down, or staying put.

                        Name

Musical Chair Predictor

Isaias Afewrki :

You got to be kidding.  Hes got a job for life.

Abraha Kassa:

Security man.  His job is to make Isaias feel secure.  An impossible job.  Very  good at keeping up with the top people. Even imitates the bosss voice in his speeches.

Mesfin Hagos:

Exiled.  No more wedi maakel, come back appeals, from PFDJ.   Mr. Mesfin Hagos still playing by the rules of PFDJ and still cares about the opinion of  his  former colleagues, denying himself political maneuverability.

Fozia Hashim:

Justice Minister.  Responsible for perverting justice to fit Isaiass definition of justice: put dissidents in jail and throw away the key.  Ethnic balancing. Will not let the skilled people in the Ministry do their jobs.  Very serious about the ideal Eritrea being portrayed to foreigners.

Abdella Jaber:

Organizing the organized and ensuring society is polarized.  Key guy in equating patriotism with membership in PFDJ and a by-product of skunis-wedini culture.

Alamin Sheik Saleh:

Was going to join the G-15.  Then decided he was too busy building a villa in Keren.  Semi-retired. Tigre (wedi Sheik) upper class. Blackmailed from past mistakes.

Ali Said Abdella:

Hagos Gebrehiwet:

Responsible for ensuring that PFDJ coffers are full to the rim.  Not interested in the debate on making Tigrigna and/or Arabic official languages.  Believes the official language is hard currency and wants to have as much of it as possible.   Very safe as long as he keeps the money flowing.  Presently in Middle East to buy $ 15 million worth of fertilizers. Private Minister of Finance for Isaias.

Alamin M. Said:

PFDJ Secretary.  Despised by Isaias Afwerki but retained for ethnic balance until replaced by younger Eritreans from the right ethnic background.  Blackmailed by Isaias for a role in "menka'a". Afraid from being kicked out if the dictatorship is removed.  Doesn't even have a consituency of this own ethnic group.

Germano Nati:

In Jail after signing the "G-15" letter to Isaias.

Askalu Menkerios:

The next Foreign Minister, tapped by Isaias to reward the most loyal constituency: adetat. Adetat do not know Askalu the most anti-women person. Perpetuator of the govt is pro-women lie. Accused of being the "destroyer of  BANA," The first organization set to help train Ex-combatant women.

PFDJ Cultural Czar, responsible for endless arrays of mandatory feel-good festivals designed to keep Eritreans off-focus.  Safe job.

The brain behind PFDJ.  Job is very safe as long as well-meaning people dont make him as famous (or infamous) as Isaias, which will then trigger a freeze.

Hamid Himid:

Arrested with the G-11.

Osman S Mohammed:

Education Minister.  Job safe as long as he doesnt question wisdom of mother language education or, God forbid, raise the issue of Arabic as a mode of education.

Tesfai Gebreselassie:

Minister of Energy And Mines. His attack on G15 guaranteed promotion.

Muhyadin Shengeb:

NUEYS chair.  Job very safe as long as the many conglomerates owned by NUEYS dont compete directly with Red Sea Corporation and as long as nobody asks why a 40 year old is considered Youth.

Almaz Ljam:

Unknown, until recently.

Ahmed Tahir Baduri:

UN Ambassador.  Job safe for as long as he is needed for the ethnic balancing requirement.  Job security enhanced when younger versions of himself are denied opportunities for advancement.
