Open uproar against giffa Print E-mail
By Asmara, Eritrea - Aug 13, 2002

The Eritrean people continue to revolt against the governments roundup (giffa) campaign.  Gedab News has learned that, last Wednesday, two more F-1 (grenade) bombs exploded in the Asmara neighborhoods of Radio Marinayo and Bahti Meskerem. In Keren, there was an unsuccessful attempt to blow up the weapon arsenal.

Throughout Eritrea, government representatives who organized community seminars to explain the need for the roundups have met stiff resistance from parents who have already seen off two, three or even five children to the war front.   In nearly all cases, the subjects of the giffa are the sole breadwinners of the family.

The Government of Eritrea explains that the roundup is necessary because many eligible youth have not fulfilled the mandatory maetot service and many of the official-looking menkesakesi (release forms) the youth carry are forged.  Excepting Asmara Airports immigration and customs office, the security forces have recalled all government seals from all government offices and have instructed all the provincial (zoba) administrative offices to cease activities until they receive new government seals.  The banks have been instructed to accept deposits but to not allow any withdrawals for whatever reason.  Our reporter tells Gedab News a de facto state of emergency has been declared in Eritrea.
