PFDJ AND THE NEW GENERATION: EYE AND DUST (part 1) Print E-mail
By Tsegay G/libanos,uk - Sep 22, 2002
I am not sure if PFDJ is replica of EPLF. But I know forsure since the baptism of the new name- 1994, many of the prominent member ofthe EPLF, were not content. We have been observing many silently frozen orrelieved from their office and some liquidated. During the establishment ofthis ruling party, we heard the abolition of the clandestine party peoplesparty. We have no idea yet, what it had been doing within Eritrea peoples liberationfront (EPLF). Imagine a party within a party. No doubt how it could be liablefor anti-democratic move. After few years, termination of the secrete party andformation of the PFDJ, we learned the set up of special court under pretext offight against corruption, that directly responsible to president IseyasAfeworki. The most shocking is it doesnt give the right to defend, appeal orconsultation. Whether you are innocent or guilty, you are under complete handof the few none law trained ruthless military people. Have you ever thoughtthis court might had the foresight to suppress any potential democraticmovement, like 1993s demonstration, and 1994s war disabled fighters rallythat were just called for their basic human right and the like the latelyreformist movement.

Whatsoever, is this party has the right agenda which can putgood foundation to the new generation? What vision do this regime have for thenew generation that had been trusted them and committed to carry out what evertheir decisions were? Is the culture of this regime right to adopt the newgeneration? As their real condition revealed, in a nutshell, they have nothinggood for this enthusiastic and committed generation to rebuild the new and oneof the poorest nation in the world. Especially, at this particular historicalperiod, what the new generation could learn from his eras leaders are theculture of suppression, culture of war, culture of dictatorship, etc.

The youngsters desperately hated the government, becausethey are fore            most victims ofthe unhealthy policy of the government. Their golden age has been ruined andstill passing miserable life. They are under forced labour for indefiniteperiod. At this epoch, their future is uncertain. Most of them are at the stateof hopelessness. All their dreams career ambitions, programmes are aborted outWhen the Eritrea leaders get more and more lunatic, and all their future isgetting darker and darker. A lot are suffering from stress. As a result manynumber of youth are visiting with serious complaints to St Mary PsychiatricHospital Asmara. Unprecedented numbers of visitors are recorded-It increased byabove 50% after the border conflict. When their mothers came out of their homeand stretch their hands for daily bread, how can they resist it? Many areforced to leave their country. Like during the Derge regime, disappearance ofpeople has become common. People do not trust each other. A lot of stooges arescattered all over the country. Imagine Eritrea government against his ownpeople, which never did during the critical wartime with our neighbour country, while the people was complaining about. These all have disappointed the youthof Eritrea.

On the other side the PFDJ leaders and their loyalists, arebuilding villas, even in the time of war. Where did they get these all money?Of course they are corrupted of man power and building materials. One day I metold buddy who is member of national service, who came from front. When I askedif he had come for holiday. His answer was no. I came to work on my bossshouse he said. What are you talking about? I was surprised. Yes, but dontworry it is good opportunity for me. Because at least I can be near my poorlyfamily Female youngsters appeared to be raped by gunpoint and serve as slavesfor the military leaders. They are as privilege for them. Overall they havebeen forced to have fatherless child and some are victims of sexuallytransmitted diseases.

The people Eritrea in general, the new generation especiallyhad expected a lot from the miracle makers of elder brother and sisters. Yes,no one had a tiny suspicision to those who promised they would providegovernment that give freedom of free expression, an opportunity citizens cancontribute their best role on construction of the devastated country. But thepeople was completely misled, because EPLF emanated them from Africancolonization. This historical event gave the leaders an image of omen. Absolutetrust. There was time the leader of the ruling party, Isaias Afeworki to beconsidered as indispensable and incisive .He was smart enough on keeping hischarismatic image, sharp, clear and bright. How? Yes, how many of us have everthought this tyrant man had had hidden ambition for power? May be few. He hasbeen working to show himself that he would the only one could come to mind ofthe people to be candidate to lead the country for indefinite years. He kickedout those who challenged or critic of him. Endless reshuffle high officials, just to implicate that they were not competent. He never likes someone who canshield his crown. Eventually, he created rift of leadership. He is also veryshowy. Every year on May 24,he used to cross the dancing crowd in Combishtato, enjoyed the praise shouting and clapping from his young brothers and sisters.

This absolute authoritarian man, however never have gooddreams for the new generation. He never had and will never have in the future. When he watched the marching of the thousands of graduates from Sawa trainingcamp (rape camp) through his sunglass, his warrior mind was ignited. He was notthinking constructive ideas. As far as this leadership continue on power theyouth of Eritrea will never get peace. PFDJ and the new generation are `eye anddust. As long as the dust is in the eye the tears will not stop flowing. Why?

Peace of a nation not only disturb by external forces, butalso internally. And PFDJ leaders have no agenda of reconciliation. Becausethey think it is humiliation for them, as they had higher hand in liberation ofthe country. But someone who boosts of sacrifice his life for the good ofhis/her country and people must make some compromises and control naturalemotions. Instead, from time to time the government of PFDJ appear to besuppressive. All the democratic right of the people abused, corruption of powercame to an event, no accountability/balance. All the promises of 1987-secondcongress for multiple parties are betrayed, with so many pretexts. A nationcontinued with out constitution for 11 years. Leaders dont need any greenlight for serious decision from national parliament War could be declared atany time as the tyranny government wish it. There is no frame of work to hearthe view of the people.. So how can we expect peace to be guaranteed if leadersare above law?

Whatsoever, the foremost victim of all these abusivemeasures the new generation. But the question is, what is the response? Arethey condoning the government to do all the unlawful action over them? In myopinion, the answer is no, because in so many ways we could witness thereaction of the new generation. The students of university of Asmaras move arenot easy. They might look now tamed but they showed us what is their stance. Ifwe quote the Alexander Dubach word would be enough Now you are invading us byforce but our democratic ideology will not be killed, that is the importantprinciple The journalist who are languishing in prison are good example. Theywere reflecting the view of the people. They were talking about truth, and arein prison for truth.

Excluding those opportunistic group of people who are memberthe Eritrea union of youth and students, those who claim that they have moneyin the banks of Eritrea (afraid of frozen), those are in exile shamefullyafraid of they might be deprived of the one month holiday time in Asmara andthose who are brain washed and became victims of the divide and ruleprinciple of the PFDJ are all on the stance of calling immediate surrender ofpower of the brutally dictatorial government to the people of Eritrea.
