From day one the journey for our young country, Eritrea, in many ways has been a long one filled with twists, turns, detours and crossroads. And today, our Eritrea finds itself at a horrible crossroad. Dej-avu all over again; however, this is different than any other time, because, our social challenges are mounting, our economy is at the rock bottom and our political differences are sharpening and I am afraid all have the potential of getting worse if we dont voice our concerns. I would like to see the whole healthy Eritrean community again. One of the biggest reasons, we find ourselves in the present situation, is not only because of Issayas. It is true the Issayas experience has been a terrible one because, he held up a measuring stick and he set a standard against which we could measure and limit our ideas about ourselves. But, also because we failed to trust ourselves and our own thinking, and allow others to convince us that our thought, ideas, plans, and visions are not valid. We all have a share of responsibility. Issayas did not come from no where, we created him. He rose out of our collective consciousness and couldnt have existed without it. The consciousness of separation, segregation and superiority of we verses they; of us and them is what created the Issayas experience. We must remember that group consciousness is powerful it can produce a wonderful beauty or unspeakable ugliness the choice is ours. For years most of us supported Issayas because we thought he was the right leader. And when millions of us supported Issayas ideas, he may have thought that all his ideas were the right ideas even though he could have been wrong, since nobody was questioning his authority. Finally, it appears a reasonable number of the Eritrean public, has started to see things differently. There is an abundance of analysis, on many of the issues that galvanize our country. A lot of this analysis is driven by, the desire to do whats right, and the desire no to do anything wrong. This means people started to make assessment, about who they are and whom they wish to be, in relation to the Issays experience. And they are saying enough is enough. Nonetheless, how do we get out of this misery? I dont have a master solution or remedy besides advising everybody to voice your concerns. Your view might be challenged or questioned but it is all-good as long as it is for the better of the country. However, some people have a very dark view about our country. They dont believe in goodness of the people, and they question other peoples motives. It is very easy to be judged, you might be called Wayane, Mujahdin etc. However, you can not be effective if you can not wipe some of the cynicism away and trust the basic goodness of Eritrean people and their ability to distinguish between, good and bad. I cannot stress enough that we need to stand for ideas that are important for the development of our society and we need to support people of character. When we have done this, we can say we have done our best to advance and hold to higher values; and our contribution will, in some way, have a lasting legacy in our society. Furthermore everybody should understand, as long as there is one Eritrean, denied of his rights, we are all affected. Every civilized nation understands that and acts on it, but us. The choice is ours. Finally people need to realize, no group has the luxury of running around here and there doing their own thing. We must become interdependent, linked together in an Eritrean bond of caring and sharing. Probably this could be against the will of some people, nevertheless, its imperative to learn to accept it, since, it is the only way. Lets reach out our hand to make sure there is no one Eritrean behind us regardless of his religion or ethnicity and bring him to our side, so the Eritrean dream will became a reality for all of us. What's important is not who arrive first, but rather that we all arrive together and in time. |
