The Dictator And Security Hysteria Print E-mail

These days the dictator is busy preparing blueprints for treaties, and sending letters to the leaders of the Red Sea Basin and the Horn of Africa nations, urging them to sign security pacts with him.

What is the rational behind these initiatives for security agreements? Is it in the priorities and demands of the Eritrean people? Will these treaties assist him in defeating the Ethiopian regime? Of course, they will not. Therefore, what is the actual reason that motivated the dictator to behave contrary to his behavior and urge part of the Arab countries to sign a security agreement with him? Why is he suddenly interested in a joint security pact with them? Does he truly believe that the Arab countries would comply?

This move by the dictator gives the impression that he has learned the significance of geography; but trying to slice more than a quarter of the Arab League nations and invite them to make a security pact does not indicate that he has learned the importance of geography!

Primarily, most countries call for treaties when they are concerned with the economies of their countries. They convene economic treaties for the prosperity of their peoples. However, the regime in Eritrea played deaf for the past seventeen years; causing great harm to the Eritrean people and their neighbours, and ruining the Eritrean economy. This "Uqwaro," piggybank, system of economy, supported by PFDJ’s "mekete festivals," and which discounts criticisms by simple stating that its critics "tegayeyom," erred; a regime that tries to solve issues through confrontations, "der'em," has brought Eritrea to the present catastrophic state: starvation, dread and the production of refugees. Even the citizens left behind are on their toes to depart the country at the opportunity to do so.

The dictator, instead of finding workable solutions that can rescue the people of Eritrea and alleviate their current situation, is deeply engrossed in arranging drafts for security accords. He is sending his delegates to the countries of our region for this purpose: the miseries of the Eritrean people have never been in the agenda of the regime - neither in the past, nor in the present and they will not be in the future.

The central problem that concerns the dictator is his own security. To ensure that, he could go to any length: change his political colour and switch his position 180 degrees - from one extreme position to another without any hesitation. He just wants to secure his regime from the uprising of the Eritrean people who someday, will certainly surprise him.

To secure himself, the dictator implements similar methods that were developed on the ashes of his old security apparatus, "Halewa Sewra." He has crossed all the barriers towards the throne with brutality and secured it illegally.

The regime has begun to deteriorate when the dictator betrayed his colleagues who demanded accountability. He imprisoned the G-15 and curbed their support base. It was a major turning point that heralded the emergence of a fully blown out dictatorship.

Currently, the crisis has reached its apex; and the dictator has begun to lose his confidence in the security agents who, until recently, were horrifying the corrupted generals who wouldn’t think of challenging his authority. He appears to have lost the ground. As a result, his uncertainties has led him to the quest for security outside Eritrea.

This pursuit for security outside Eritrea by the dictator indicates a few security personnel had began to consider their stance towards the regime. Though late, they are noticing that they are merely serving the dictator against their own people- the same people they are supposed to protect. Now, they are more convinced than any time before that this regime must go. This new attitude of the security agents can be detected in their reluctance to execute the orders of the regime. The security personnel’s lack of enthusiasm in obeying orders can be seen in the increase of escapees since the beginning of this year.

In the recent past, it was impossible even for two friends to speak their minds to each other due to the tight control of the security agents of all walks of life. But now, people are discussing their predicaments under the regime in Eritrea without fear. This reveals that the security members seem to have regained their consciousness that obliged them to align with their people.

This gradual change in the position of the security agents, and their opposition to the regime, has compelled the dictator to design a way out: the regional security agreements that he craves to attain.

It is amazing to discern, our youth who are seeking refuge in our neighboring countries. But the dictator, too, has started to seek refuge in the countries of our region; he is planning to do it through the contracts that he expects to sign, and by doing so, he aims to silence the growing discontent of the Eritrean security personnel.

At present, I believe, nobody in Eritrea is safe from the assaults of the regime. Everyone is at risk whether they are the security agents or other entities composed of crooks that the regime has used to suppress the people of Eritrea. The dictator has reached a critical stage to the extent that he views everyone inside Eritrea as his opponent. If he succeeds in the security treaty deals that he is pursuing, his wrath will turn against all- especially against the security agents.

No doubt the security breakup will facilitate a move by the patriots in the Eritrean Defense Forces and Eritrean Security Organs to rescue their people from the grips of the regime. For the Eritrean Defense Forces, the process of changing the regime will not take thirty years of struggle; it will be a small errand that will not take more than twenty-four hours.

The Eritrean opposition needs the patriots in the Eritrean Defense Forces, and equally, the patriots in the Eritrean Defense Forces require encouragement and support from the Eritrean Democratic Alliance. Both of them need each other to fulfill their responsibilities towards their people.

The Eritrean Democratic Alliance does not have a joint military command. However, I am hopeful they have a Joint Security command that can facilitate communication with members of the Eritrean Defense Forces and Eritrean security organs. Moreover, I wish they plan for the mission of bringing criminals to the courts of justice.
