Gedab News has learned that Seyoum Ogbamichael has replaced Ahmed Nasser as chairman of the Eritrean Liberation Front-Revolutionary Council (ELF-RC). Ahmed Nasser is now in charge of a newly created office called the Unity Affairs Office. Ibrahim Mohammed Ali who held the position of the chairman, before Ahmed Nasser, has now been elected to the position of Spokesperson for the ELF-RC, a position formerly held by Dr. Habte Tesfamariam. Sahle Tesfay now heads the Social Affairs office while Mengisteab Asmerom retained the office of organizational affairs. The foreign affairs office is vacant by the time this news item was published. However, observers believe that Seyoum Ogbamichale will hold the office for the foreseeable future. The elections to the offices were carried out during the second session of the RC, which was held between August 11th and August 18th, 2002. The creation of the new office, unity affairs, which Ahmed Nasser heads, is believed to be in response to the public pressure on the opposition forces to close ranks and unify their resources to avoid violent power struggle in the event of a sudden fall of the Eritrean regime. The armed wings of the opposition forces do not have a central command. Recent meetings of many opposition groups focused on the issue of national unity and on upgrading the relations between the member organizations within the Alliance of Eritrean National Forces, popularly known as Alliance. Although there is an armed resistance to its rule, the PFDJ, the only single party ruling Eritrea, doesn't recognize the existence of any opposition force, including the EPLF-DP which was formed by former members of the PFDJ.
