Eritrea and Djibouti, a Border Crisis Print E-mail
By Awate.com's Gedab News - Apr 21, 2008

Diplomatic sources informed Gedab News that a border crisis has developed between Eritrea and Djibouti.

Djibouti accuses Eritrean forces of encroaching seven kilometers inside its territories in the Dumera region bordering the two countries a week ago. Eritrea, however, insists that its forces are in sovereign Eritrean territories.

The two countries had similar border crisis in the same area in 1996. The crisis was defused after Eritrean forces retreated from the area.

Djibouti has the largest overseas French military presence as well as an American base.

The Qatari prime minister is mediating to resolve the crisis between Isaias Afwerki of Eritrea and Ismail Guelleh of Djibouti. Both have agreed to meet in an Arabian Gulf state to talk about the crisis.

In another development, the Ethiopian government announced today that it has severed diplomatic ties with Qatar.
