Fire broke in a refugee camp Print E-mail

Shegerab market, a makeshift camp at a Sudanese refugee camp, was burnt down on midnight, February 27, 2008, according to omaal.org, an Eritrean website.

According to Omaal, “the refugees rushed to the location of the fire and succeeded in stopping its spread to the residential area” but not before the fire had completely destroyed 75 stores.

The market was established by Eritrean refugees, some of whom lived in the camps for decades,  in an attempt to sustain themselves. Since the UNHCR stopped assisting them, the Eritrean refugees have been facing difficult living conditions. The fire incident signals yet another phase of difficulty.

A call has been issued at Omaal to “all those who have compassionate hearts, humanitarian organizations to come to the help of our people in the Shegerab refugee camps."
