Eritrean Global Solidarity (EGS), Formerly known as ‘Eritrean Anti Tyranny Global Solidarity, a network of Eritrean civic organizations, held its founding conference in Alexandria, Virginia (USA) on Saturday, December 15, 2007.

The conference was the first of its kind in holding an open conference that allowed non-member observers to attend the conference and participate in the conferences’ deliberations.

The purpose of the conference was to convert the working relationship of the organizations from a loose network to an umbrella group.  

The conference adopted a charter and by laws.

The board of directors was formed of one member from each member organization.

In the coming few days, EGS will assign a board member to lead each of the five offices that would form its executive body.

Seven new members were added to the already existing founding member organization.

EGS affirmed its commitment to struggle for Justice, Human Rights and Democracy and decided the three terms to become an integral part of its official name and Logo.

EGS also left its membership doors open for organizations that are not members of the EGS.

The conference also identified several immediate tasks and assigned task forces that include at least one members of the board of directors. The tasks include, publishing EGS’s charter and bylaws; fundraising research; Nevsun case; studying ways of sponsoring or cooperation with Voice of Meselna Delina radio; and to work hard in raising awareness of the plight of Eritrean refugees everywhere.

The EGS recognized the important roles that sister organization from other regions of the world played and called on all of them to consolidate their organizations in preparation for a joint conference for further consolidation of our joint Global efforts and struggle. To this end, the founding conference was attended by organizations from the USA and Canada. EGS will work diligently with organizations from different parts of the world to bring about a Global umbrella.

EGS urges all Eritrean individuals to either join existing organizations in their locality or form organizations for effective struggle. It further calls on professionals to form associations as a means to garner better efficiencies and harmonize their work in the quest for justice, human rights and democracy.

EGS thanks all international organization who have been on the side of the Eritrean people in the struggle for Justice, Human Rights and democracy and thanks Amnesty International, Reporters Without Borders, Human Right Watch and other organizations. EGS affirms that it will establish strong working relations with the above mentioned and other organization.

The EGS lauds the patience and perseverance of the Eritrean people and promises to struggle tenaciously to empower the peace loving Eritrean people in their quest for justice, human rights and democracy.
