Awate Team: Offer to Mediate Intra-AENF Dispute Print E-mail

Awate Team's Readiness to Mediate between the Disputant Parties in the Alliance of Eritrean National Forces (AENF)

Mediation as a way of resolving disputes is very familiar in our culture. It has been used to solve legal and personal conflicts for centuries. Based on this cultural heritage, the Awate Team has set up a Mediating Committee to mediate and provide new ideas for settlement.

Considering:

  • The importance of conducting a unified struggle against the dictatorship in Eritrea;
  • The benefits the citizens of Eritrea could gain from a mediated agreement of the opposition forces;
  • The risk of the knock-on effect this sudden dispute might cause in the struggle for democracy;

The Awate Team expresses its readiness to start a mediation process between the disputant parties in the Alliance of Eritrean National Force (AENF) before their misunderstanding escalates.  The Awate Team offers its neutral stand and resources to assist the new leadership of the AENF and ELF-RC to work out a solution to their problem.

Prior to the dispute, the disputants had unanimously approved a number of principles and future plans on their charter.  This indicates to us that the dispute was on technical and procedural approach, and not one emanating from divergent principles or political viewpoints.  The Awate Team is encouraged by:

      The fact  that the member organizations have aired their commitment to iron out their differences amicably.

The ELF-RC still maintains that it is committed to remain a member of the Alliance and work within its structure.
         Many concerned citizens are determined to bring this sad event to a positive conclusion.

The Team affirms to apply a citizen's approach to the conflict. The objective of the mediation is not to pass judgment on who is right or wrong but to help the disputants evaluate their goals and options in order to find their own solution.

So far, the Awate Team has:

  • Set up a committee composed of three team members;
  • Contacted the disputants and expressed its readiness to assist in the mediation process as soon as possible;
  • Voiced its concerns over the risk of unrestrained exchanges of accusations and counter-accusations which might lead to further escalation of the discord;
  • Taken measures to control the damage that has already been inflicted;
  • Started making preparations to deploy its resources.

The Team acknowledges that mediation is a multi-stage process designed to give the disputants time to speak and be listened to, to meet privately with our team and to work together toward a settlement. As the Team works its way through such processes, it calls upon Eritreans:

  • To appreciate the limited magnitude of the dispute;
  • To remain calm and avoid unnecessary speculations and accusations;

Focus on the bigger picture rather than trying to exasperate what we hope is a controllable misunderstanding.
