Hassen Feres, 82, Arrested In Massawa Print E-mail

On Monday, the security forces of Eritrea’s ruling regime arrested Mr. Hassen Sheik Feres, an elderly citizen whose contribution to Eritrea’s armed struggle for independence dates back to the 1960s.  He is believed to be 82 years old.

As is the case with the thousands of political prisoners in Eritrea, he has not been charged with any crime.   Sources report that, shortly before his arrest, he had met with President Isaias Afwerki and told him “fear God and rule justly.”   Contacted by phone, a relative reported, “His age and long service to Eritrea did not immunize him from retribution.”

Trained in Italy, Mr. Hassen Feres is one of the first Eritrean sea captains.   He is held in high esteem for his role during the armed struggle when he spent years risking his life and clandestinely ferrying arms and logistics to the remote Red Sea ports of Mersa Gelbub and Marsa Tekhlai and the Danakil coastal areas.

Since Isaias Afwerki relocated his office to Massawa almost two years ago, hundreds of security and spy officers have followed him there and Massawa residents are bearing the full weight of the security office.

Several weeks ago, the security forces arrested Mr. Hassen Mohammed Salem, the president of Massawa’s Islamic Endowment (Awqaf.)  No reason was given for his arrest.  As is the case with all political prisoners, his family had no visitation rights and his wife passed away while he was imprisoned.
