Ibrahim Hamid, Eritrean Diplomat, Defects Print E-mail

Mr. Ibrahim Osman Hamid, an official in the Eritrean Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has abandoned the PFDJ government and sought political asylum in the United Kingdom.

Between 2003 and 2005 Mr. Ibrahim served in the Eritrean Embassy in Cairo in charge of culture and education affairs. From 2005 until his defection, he was a member of the Secretariat of the Eritrean delegation which had been hosting peace negotiations between the Government of Sudan and the Eastern Front, a Sudanese opposition group.

His previous assignment includes working for the Eritrean Center for Strategic Studies, a ruling-party owned and operated think tank, where he was a researcher from 1996-2003. 

Mr. Ibrahim Hamid holds a Masters degree in Media and Development from the Institute of Research and Arab Studies in Cairo (2004) and a License in Cultural Studies from Damascus University (1989). As a student, he was an activist in the Eritrean student movement both in Sudan and Syria.
