The Eritrean Electric Authority has announced a power rationing program that has resulted in frequent power cuts in the month of March.
The reason is presumed to be the high cost of oil and Eritrea’s hard currency shortage. The power rationing affects all regions, including the capital of Asmara. In the Central region, each of the three designated geographic areas will be in blackout for six hours every three days. The rationing will affect industrial establishments in Adi Guadad, Adi Sogdo and Kushet. Remote parts of Eritrea, already experiencing power shortages, have been affected more drastically. In Barentu, for example, which was already experiencing blackouts for 9 hours per day, power provision has been further curtailed from 15 hours a day to 6 hours a day. |
