Alliance To Unify Its Military Force And Accept The 1997 Constitution Print E-mail
By Gedab News (Nairobi, Kenya) - Oct 17, 2002

The leadership of the Alliance of Eritrean National Forces (AENF), which is holding its annual meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, under the chairmanship of Yassin Mohammed Abdella, has agreed, in principle, to unify the military wing of its member organizations.   This “national army,” according to the Alliance, would be inclusive of the Eritrean Defense Force (EDF.)

Gedab News has also learned that the Alliance has reportedly modified its stance towards Eritrea’s 1997 Constitution, which it had previously rejected as illegitimate and unrepresentative.   In its session, the Alliance agreed that the Constitution is a “good start,” albeit subject to unspecified revisions.   Presumably, the nature of the “revision” would be discussed in a national conference, which is now scheduled for December.  Meanwhile, the Alliance has agreed to form a national parliament in exile.

With respect to elections, Gedab News has learned that the two top candidates are Abdella Idris and Herui T. Bairou, whose organization, the Eritrean Cooperative Party, was granted membership at the annual meeting.   The representatives have agreed that the top vote-getter would be the Chairman of the Alliance, with the second vote-getter automatically assigned as the Chairman of the legislative body.
