The Eritrean government is still holding in detention thousands of citizens who cannot account for their children who either failed to report to Sawa or have been absent without leave (AWOL.) This government policy, which has been effective since July 2005, requires of parents to either surrender their missing military-age children to authorities or be jailed. The bail is set at 10,000 to 50,000 Nakfa (1USD = 15Nkf.) While the case of all the parents is tragic, as it includes mothers with infants and octogenarians, some reports Gedab learns of are particularly heart rending. One such case is that of Mr. Debretsion Weldeamlak, from the village of Haren. The elderly gentleman is the father of Zemichael, Grebreyesus, Genet and Himman, all of whom are in the registry of Eritrea’s martyrs. His youngest and only surviving son disappeared while on a visit to Asmara three years ago. Still, Mr. Debretsion Weldemlak, who could not afford the bail amount, remains in jail. In September, while touring "Zoba Debub" (Southern Zone), President Isaias Afwerki held a session with the citizens who asked him about the fate of their incarcerated neighbors. Implausibly, the president answered "I know nothing of this issue." Related Story: http://www.awate.com/artman/publish/article_4188.shtml |
