On the night of Thursday, 3 November 2005, President Isaias Afwerki smashed a bottle into Mr. Alamin Gerewyna Mohammed Se'ids face causing a big cut across his forehead. Alamin was immediately hauled off for treatment. He is now recovering at Sembel (Enda Korea) Hospital in Asmara. The incident took place around midnight in the West End, a nightclub inside Expo Grounds in Asmara, where both, Isaias and Alamin, were partying with a number of other senior government and party officials. Alamin Gereweyna Mohammed Seid, a well-known businessman in Asmara, (not to be confused with the PFDJ Secretary, Alamin Mohammed Seid) is a close friend of Isaias Afwerki and was EPLFs de facto representative in Saudi Arabia in the 1980s to early 1990s. In a similar incident in 2000, Isaias Afwerki had caused the evacuation of Mr. Naizgy Kflu, former Minister of Information, to Russia for treatment after a scuffle that led to Mr. Naizghis face-down tumble and loss of front teeth. Such incidents are part of a pattern that is now all too familiar to the residents of Asmara. The president is said to get into brawls with his colleagues on a regular basis. |
