Ambassador Mohammed Nur Ahmed, Eritrea's former envoy to China whose diplomatic passport was revoked by his government, has been granted political asylum in Australia. The Eritrean government has named Tsegai “Dinnish” Tesfatsion as his replacement. Mr. Mohammed Nur Ahmed is the husband of Zahra Jaber, the former mayor of Keren, who is now also in Australia. Meanwhile, Mr. Mesfin Hagos of EPLF-DP, who had been on a working visit to the Sudan since 19 November, has departed Khartoum on 28 November. During his stay, Mr. Mesfin Hagos met and held discussions with Sudanese government officials, Sudanese news outlets, diplomatic corps accredited to the Sudan as well as the large Eritrean community in Khartoum. His meeting with Eritreans was held at the Al zubeir Center on 25 November. Unlike government-organized meetings which used to be attended only by PFDJ functionaries and loyalists, Mr. Mesfin Hagos's meeting was attended by Eritreans with various politicial leanings and, consequently, was lively and, at times, confrontational. The EPLF-DP delegation included the former ambassador to Nigeria and the former charge d'affairs to Lebanon. In wide-ranging interviews, seminars and sessions, Mr. Mesfin Hagos welcomed the support of the Sudan; spoke extensively of the suffering "the ruling regime is inflicting on the Eritrean people. Sources close to the EPLF-DP stated that they are in the process of convening an organizational congress to restructure the party and elect leadership. |
