By Eritrean Students and residents in Pretoria, South Africa - Feb 06, 2004

Disgruntled Eritrean students and residents of Pretoria are on hunger strike at the premises of the UNHCR office today to protest the inhuman and illegal deportation of Samuel Andeberhan to Eritrea by the Department of Home Affairs with the collaboration of the Eritrean regime’s representative to South Africa. The protesters handed a memorandum to a representative of the UNHCR office in Pretoria. Carrying the placards reading: " UNHCR STOP ILLEGAL DEPORTATION OF SAMUEL RIGHT NOW", "DEPORATION TO ERITREA EQUALS DEATH SENTENCES" etc. The protesters chanted slogans condemning the silence of the UNHCR office and the abuses they are encountering from the Eritrean Embassy to South Africa.

The protesters learned that the Department of Home Affairs were preparing to deport Samuel to Eritrea secretly. Samuel has applied for an asylum after the Eritrean Embassy has void his passport and visa in the midst of his studies at the University of the Free State in early September last year. Samuel is a state less person and his application for an asylum was unreasonably refuted. He was denied the right to appeal due to some baseless reasons and all the details and conspiracies surrounding this illegal operation will be posted in the coming few days.
