Mesfin Hagos Arrives In Khartoum Print E-mail
By Gedab News - Nov 19, 2002
Gedab News has learned that Mesfin Hagos, the leader of the EPLF-DP, has arrived in Khartoum from Europe. His colleague, Adhanom Gebremariam, who was supposed to arrive with him, has been delayed and will join him in Khartoum a day late.

Ahmed Mohammed Nasser, the head of the unity affairs office of the ELF-RC, is also traveling to Khartoum. The leaders of the two organizations will meet with Sudanese officials separately. Observers say that it is likely that the two leaders will also have a bilateral meeting.

Last month, the alliance of Eritrean opposition forces, now known as Eritrean National Alliance (ENA), reorganized itself and elected a new leadership. The ELF-RC, a major partner in the alliance, walked out of the meeting to protest the election of Herui T. Bairu, who was elected to the position of secretary general by the rest of the members of the alliance. In a statement issued from the office of Seyoum Ogbamichael, ELF-RC accused the other member-organizations of the Alliance of submitting to foreign interference.

There are several initiatives underway to reconcile the two sides; however,  nothing concrete has been reached so far. Last week, the ENA formed a committee delegated to start formal talks with the ELF-RC. The committee’s members are: Tahir Shengeb, deputy secretary of the ENA, Hamid Turki, head of the political office and Hassen Assad, the head of the information office.

Seyoum Ogbamichael, the chair of the ELF-RC, has been conducting meetings and interviews in Addis Ababa since last month; meanwhile, the newly elected leaders of the ENA toured the Sudan and held public meetings with Eritreans who reside in the Sudan as well as with Sudanese officials. The ENA’s tour and public meetings were widely covered by the Sudanese media.

Sudan has given the ENA broadcast time in two stations: Kassala radio and Radio Umdurman. Our sources indicated that Yemen has promised to allocate airtime for the ENA on Sanaa Radio soon.
