Ethiopia: Parliament approves sending of peacekeeping troops to Liberia
BBC Monitoring Service - United Kingdom; Aug 19, 2003

The House of Peoples' Representatives has accepted the UN Security Council's request for Ethiopia to deploy peacekeeping troops to stop the civil war in Liberia.

The house in its 42nd regular session today unanimously accepted the request made by the UN Security Council to send its troops to stop the civil war in Liberia. Getahun Negat has the details.

[Getahun] In his report to the house, the defence minister, Abadula Gemeda, said that the UN Security Council has resolved to send a peacekeeping force to Liberia to stop the current civil strife in that country.

He said the council sent a request to various countries in Africa and other parts of the world, especially to those countries who are capable to carry a peacekeeping mission, and Ethiopia is one of them. He said the government has accepted the request in principle.

He said for Ethiopia to receive such a request from the UN Security Council, especially after foiling the Eritrean aggression, clearly demonstrates the capability of Ethiopia and its defence forces for such a mission.

Mr Abadula told the house that his ministry would thoroughly assess the situation and deploy its forces in Liberia under the banner of the UN after making the required preparations.

Mr Abadula said Ethiopia had volunteered to send its peacekeeping forces to Rwanda and Burundi and now accepting to send its troops to Liberia for a similar mission has great political benefit. He said Ethiopia's acceptance to send its peacekeeping troops to Liberia would uplift the image of the country in the UN and African Union and above all it will show the country's commitment to peace.
