Planned National Conference In Perspective Print E-mail

Being an amalgam of various political parties, the Eritrean National Alliance represents the wishes and aspirations of most nations and nationalities of the Eritrean people. And as such the number of member parties is ever on the increase. Very recently, the Eritrean Cooperative Party, The Eritrean National Democratic Front and the Democratic Party of Afar Red Sea have joined the Alliance. With the hard-core dictatorial regime in Eritrea deliberately committed to anti-peace, anti-democratic and anti-human policies the parties have no choice but cast their lot with the war-stricken, poverty-ridden and brutally oppressed peoples of Eritrea; leaving their respective political programs aside in favor of the call of the day, "National Unity".

The Alliance has never claimed nor does it intend to claim itself as the sole amalgam of parties in resolving the appalling political, economic and social problems prevailing in Eritrea. It strongly believes in nation-wide, all-embracing participatory movement in which all opposition parties to the dictatorial system voice their bitter grievance as one entity on behalf of the ever-oppressed, humiliated, disgruntled, destabilized, and ridiculed peoples of Eritrea.

To promote and familiarize its strong conviction in this regard, members of the Supreme Leadership of the Alliance, have for the previous two years been touring the Sudan, Europe and the USA to consult representatives of various parties on the possibilities of organizing a national conference. So far their endeavors seem to have paid off.

There will be no pre-conditions or any criteria set to join the conference. A committee embracing various party members is to be mandated to draw-up a broad-based agenda and to chose a venue for the conference.

It is widely assumed that most or all opposition forces to the regime, influential elders, scholars and celebrities will participate in the conference. Students of the Asmara University who escaped from the solitary dark dungeons of the police-state; and those who once were high-ranking officials of the rogue system, but who denied it their services because of its dogmatic doctrine, reckless and irresponsible machinations will be most welcome to join the conference.

Essentially, the conference is aimed at exploring various strategic means by consensus. Consensus for the purpose of solidarity among and between parties; coordination of plans for struggle; and for acting collectively in unison to dismantle the blood-thirsty regime.

Once this resolute commitment of opposition forces to that effect is consolidated, the Alliance believes that the possibility of forming a transitional government could be a reality upon which after a short duration, grass-roots free and fair participatory elections could genuinely be implemented in the poverty-stricken country. If proceedings and deliberations of the national conference were to end up in success, the eventuality of installing a democratic and a stable state after more than eleven years of harsh and intolerable reign of terror could no doubt be achieved.
