Last week, government security forces arrested Colonel Fiory from his residence. Colonel Fiory was in charge of the Godaif Police Station, a precinct in Asmara. The government has not disclosed the reason for his arrest. According to our sources, Colonel Fiory was a frequent and loud critic of the government and the ruling party. The colonel had served as Brigade Commander in the armed forces, where he served as recently as the "Third Offensive," the Eritrea-Ethiopia war of May 2000 and reportedly lost his hearing due to his proximity to the artillery fires. Meanwhile, our stringer from Asmara reported that Colonel Semon Gebredengel "was not arrested but was interrogated for a whole night by top PFDJ officials in relation to a mysterious death of a member of the security forces". Semon Gebredengel was seen in the city a day later. |
