Awate Commentary: African Big Men update. How are Clinton's "new generation" of corruption-free African leaders doing? The "new generation" club had four members: Eritrea's Isaias Afwerki; Ethiopia's Meles Zenawi; Rwanda's Paul Kagame and Uganda's Yoweri Musevini. Kagame was elected (no joke) with 95.1% of the vote; Zenawi is still counting the votes of May 2005; Musevini, who amended the constitution so he can "run" for a third term, has just declared victory before the ballots are counted. Which leaves us with Isaias... Too bored with Eritrean elections, Isaias has chosen the role of a political scientist with one obsession: analyzing Ethiopia's elections. |
