The authoritarian President Afeworki officially suspended basic freedoms in 2001 after dissidents in the ruling party called for democracy. Every hint of opposition is described as “treason.” The privately-owned media has been shut down and only the state media are allowed, preaching a rigid line. The Red Sea country has become a prison, ruled harshly by an ultra-nationalist group around Afeworki.

Naizgi Kiflu is returning to Eritrea from London Print E-mail

There are many more horrifying stories about Mr Kiflu. With time all those who are withholding information for fear of repercussions will hopefully come forward to tell about their experiences of the torture inflicted by this cruel and barbaric man. With his current plan to return to Eritrea, he will still continue to inflict torture and pain with impunity. It is unfortunate that the British legal system has not managed to prosecute him.

Hagos’s “individual circumstances” as described by the SBM, are of little or no legal consequence. Traumatized Hagos may not be the best witness for his case. His testimony may be full of inconsistencies.There may have been serious discrepancies in describing his long and arduous trip across the Sahel Desert and the Red Sea heading to Europe, thus making his story less credible.
