US Congress Petitions On Behalf of Aster Yohannes Print E-mail

Sixty eight (68) members of the United States Congress petition on behalf of Aster Yohannes, mother of four children and wife of former Foreign Minister (now jailed)Petros Solomon.  Despite assurances she was given by Girma Asmerom, Eritrea's ambassador to the US, that she has nothing to fear and should return to Eritrea from the US, she was arrested at Asmara Airport upon arrival,  For background information, see the Friends of Aster website at http://www.friendsofaster.org/who.html.  For information about the arrest, read http://www.awate.com/artman/publish/article_2788.shtml

Protests To Free Swedish-Eritrean Journalist Dawit Isaac Print E-mail

Every week, the Eritrean Embassy is petitioned by one of six different organisations - Reporters sans Frontičres, The National Press Club, The Magazines Publishers' Association, The Newspaper Publishers' Association, The Swedish Union of Journalists (SFJ) and The Dawit Support Committee. "We try to hand over a petition where we express our deep concern about the fate of Dawit Isaak and his colleagues and urge Eritrea to immediate release Isaac and his colleagues," explains Arne König of SFJ.

Thirty-six of the 56 journalists who died in the line of duty in 2004 were murdered, continuing a long-term trend documented by CPJ. The organization’s annual year-end analysis reinforced another trend—the killers usually go unpunished. In all but nine cases in 2004, CPJ found, the murders were carried out with impunity.
