There is no healthcare for the sick, no comfort for the mind, and no sympathy for those in tears...The government brought the Diaspora youth to see a modern miracle built by the Warsay-Yekaalo Campaignthe miracle was the same modern hotel that was built by the blood and sweat of the prisoners of Gelalo....The totality of the mistreatment at Gelalo cannot be chronicled. But when the pitch dark turns to dawn and the entirety of the story is told, the Eritrean people will shudder.

After about two hours, the ship came to harbor. We were told disembark and it was then that we knew that our final destination was Dahlak Island....Traitors! they bellowed, Eritrea has given birth to garbage! Some of our guards disclosed that somebody had attempted suicide and that they had saved him. We heard [the supervisor] say, Why didnt you let him! Why didnt you let him die!

In a manner reminiscent of the Gestapos torture practices in Germany and Europe, from 1:00 AM until dawn, the jail shakes with the screams of prisoners receiving severe beating.  When one asks: what for? The answer is: the older prisoners are accused of being influenced by the arrested ministers [the G-15] and the young ones [members of the conscripted military] are accused of absence-without-leave.

President Isaias and the PFDJ maintain an absolute monopoly on all forms of political and economic power.They control what few media there are in the country and have fenced of the population from the outside world while fostering a xenophobic hostility to foreigners to distract the citizenery from the privations of daily life and the persistent denial of basic rights and liberties....torture of prisoners is wide spread and systematic and that it is the standard form of military interrogation and punishment. No public officials have ever been prosecuted for torturing or abusing prisoners.... At least one of the G-15 is thought to have died of what one government official told a visiting journalist in 2003 were natural causes...
