As they eat, drink and dance until dawn to the rhythmic and uplifting Tigrinya “kudda” beats celebrating Eritrea’s Independence Day, the regime and its supporters intone the slogan “Victory to the Masses!“ But the people of Eritrea, who have hardly anything left to eat or to celebrate, have already lost the battle. |

And to add an insult to an injury, the government of Eritrea has decided to keep the crisis under cover, hidden from the public, and has made a conscious decision not to counter the accusation by the government of Djibouti. For the life of me, I fail to see the wisdom behind this misguided policy. Even if the whole incident never happened and was a fabrication, the government should have defended itself vigorously and exposed the farce. |

On style, particularly on humbleness, Fessahaye’s comments are still within my margin of appreciation. But, honestly, I would have liked them in a more humble delivery system. You can read his comments and deduct conclusions. One point, however, deserves separate attention. He, for example, said: ‘Well, this is what you get from a person who is not convinced of his own insignificance’. |
