On December 29, 2009, two days before the year ended, I received a call: Ustaz Mohammed Beshir passed away. He had carried the Torch, AdDia’a, for decades before the torch of his life died out...Ustaz Mohammed Beshir was buried in Asmara where he had a crowded farewell that fitted him properly. May God have mercy on his pious soul. |

Secularism is an irony: in today’s Eritrean landscape, the religious have become the exponents of secularism and those who claim secular values have become bigots. For the religious, secularism is the guarantee they need to practice their rituals unhindered; it is the only guarantee that would protect them from the PFDJ and those who espouse the same values (not the same crimes). This is a matter of pride for those who call awate.com their home, and to its enemies, ayiwaHaTelomn: they just can’t take it. If google and yahoo were to go out of business, there are many Eritrean websites that would have nothing to show on their pages. But not awate.com: it has nurtured a strong crew of Eritrean writers and our light would be on. |

I hope that most anti-Arabic individuals realize that no one is asking for their permission, alms or a goodwill gesture. They should stop their patronizing attitudes: "you lack self-confidence; you betray your own language; and, you want to sell Eritrea to the Arabs." Importantly, they should stop repeating the notorious Isaias-blubber: do you speak Arabic at home? |
