I was going to write something serious, about the Laws of Proportionality... but today's Nahda is about Keren, Ethiopia's marching band music and the strange relationship between the two. Some readers will find a tongue-in-cheek commentary while Eritrea is going through hell completely disproportionate, but I have a perfect alibi: Ramadan! |

I have had so many "to be continued" in my previous posts, a friend reminded me that I owe plenty. Communism, social justice, vanguardism, patriotism, Islamists, Ali Said, Michela Wrong and other allegedy connected themes are all here. It is a Selata Tursh: a bowl of salad. I think there is a thread somewhere but I am trying to exercise my Eritreanism and be laconic in my boast. |

We yielded to the secular and religious fundmantalists and, not surprisingly, for the same reasons: deference, who am I to question such an obviously learned expert, what have I done anyway, and who am I, a lowly person, a know-nothing. Revolutionaries and radicals' first assault is on the intellectuals--and in Eritrea, the most self-flagellating and the ones with the lowest self-esteem are our educated class. |

This issue of Al Nahda will deal with the opposition and, hopefully without much pomposity, suggest ways for the EriOpp to better market itself—by refining its message and messengers and by having a clearer understanding of its target population. In other words, reformation.This will be the first part, and it begins by dealing with the Message. Al Nahda will take the scenic route (a polite way of saying it will ramble on.) |

It is good for democracy for power to change hands, even if it is to go from bad to worse. This way, there are no permanent winners or losers, but a system that works. Power corrupts. There is nothing like a loss to sober up a party, to go back to the drawing board, to re-assess its goals, to consider, for the first time, that the people must not be taken for granted and, yes, they don’t like you as much as you thought they did. |
