We have been calling for dialogue because we strongly believe that almost any problem is soluble if people have the willingness to solve it. We already know that it is not in PFDJs nature to negotiate peace but we strongly believe that any organized and credible Eritrean opposition group (the stronger and more unified the better) that had the courage and political maturity could have negotiated precisely the same peace initiative that is being proposed by Meles Zenawi now. This would have instantly elevated the Eritrean opposition leaders to statesmen, PFDJ alternatives, and would have rendered the Eritrean government instantly irrelevant. |

But this attack against a religious group is different in one key aspect: this is the first time that the authorities are placing the leadership of the major religions and denominations (Islam, Tewahdo, Catholic and Kenisha) in a position of endorsing their persecution of religious minorities. This is a dangerous precedent that should be rejected by the faithful and, indeed, by all Eritreans regardless of whether the religious leaders actually wrote the statement or, as we believe, they were coerced into lending their name to a document authored by the PFDJ.
