The "Shebakha" of Asmera Print E-mail
By Zekere Lebonna - Jun 01, 2004
After the brief euphoria, the new EPLF administration rounded up several card-carrying members of the Workers Party of Ethiopia (mind you, like people nowadays, most people were forced to join the ruling parties). Like its totalitarian ilk, the EPLF reputedly has a pigeonhole for every group it governs. Whoever opted to stay in Asmera, before its victorious march to the city, was labeled "Shebakha," – of course with a negative connotation....Now gray haired and wiser, they have a lot to share with us. It is time to "rehabilitate" them without any delay! And the bad press they received must be reversed.

By Name Withheld - Apr 21, 2004
Recently, 40 students escaped to Ethiopia and Sudan while on forced labor. 10 were captured while escaping. Nothing is known about them….Five people died recently, three from suicide. One of the dead is a person who was denied medical attention. He was suspected of stabbing himself and blaming it on “Jihad” just to avoid the forced labor. The students buried them and they raised money for their families. Students are monitored by the military police at all times when they are not in class. On Saturdays and Sundays, they are required to bring firewood and clean their environs.... The latest topic is that the Eritrean Airforce lost a MIG-29; it crashed on April 13. A Russian was killed.

In [deleted], I stayed for two weeks with my wife out side my house. After two weeks I aimed to cross to Ethiopia by a car (Toyota Landcruiser) with my friend. We painted the car with white color and also wrote on it UN on three sides. The car was owned by the Zoba Debub [Southern Region] administration and my friend was also a driver of it. In January 17-2004 we crossed to Tserona town and we passed 5 checkpoints as U.N workers. After that, we entered Tserona on Sunday  17, 2004. We were very happy because most of our problems were solved.
