The barley will be sent to Asmara Brewery (Melotti) to alleviate shortage in beer. The peanuts are to be used as a cash crop—for export only. Farmers in the environs of Keren have been told that they are to sell their peanuts to the government at 800.00 Nakfa per quintal. |

The Eritrean regime called, and held, a large meeting in Massawa last week. The meeting was attended by PFDJ politburo members, regional administrators, military leaders with ranks higher than brigade commanders, as well as ministers. The event was so secretive that even the regime’s own Ministry of Information, which usually provides a cursory summary of similar meetings, was barred from attending the meeting. |

ICG lists Andeberhan Wolde Giorgis as a senior advisor who is based out of the Nairobi, Kenya office. What his role was in writing the report is highly relevant because (a) he had, until recently, held senior positions in the Eritrean regime and (b) he has a history of alarmism. |

Samson, the “civilian general,” a contractor with close ties to General Gerezgheir “Wuchu” Andemariam, and the general’s driver (no name given) were arrested in Adi Quala while attempting to leave the country. They were airlifted by a military helicopter and are now in the custody of Eritrean authorities. |
