The idea of a “National Conference” has been discussed by Eritrean opposition groups since at least 2002, when the legislative arm of the EDA mandated its executive office to facilitate it. Lack of harmony, funds, and differences in vision bottlenecked the process and the idea was idle for the next six years. In May 2008, the EDA Congress revitalized the issue and elected a seven-member preparatory committee to proceed with setting up the Conference. |

Abu Rejela was a comrade of Hamid Idris Awate, the leader of Eritrea’s revolution, and his acclaim was established in the Battle of Togoruba. On the 15th of March in 1964, Abu Rejela led a small unit of ragtag Eritrean combatants to engage and prevail over Ethiopia’s occupation army. Togoruba was a seminal moment in Eritrea’s history: it emboldened the revolution and heralded a message that it was possible for poorly equipped but highly motivated Eritreans to engage Ethiopia’s well-equipped occupational force in direct combat and inflict heavy losses. |

In an attempt to clear up the contradictions, Gedab News spoke with a knowledgeable Eritrean source with contacts in the Eritrean Defense Forces (EDF.) According to our source, “It was a surprise attack and the regime was dumb-struck by the sudden and ferocious attack of the opposition that it does not recognize.” Gedab News has also conducted a phone interview on January 6th with Mr. Mohammed Jabir, who is in charge of the ENSF’s military command. |

The three measures, targeted as they are specifically on the regime, are supposed to help it see the light. According to Susan Rice, the US representative to the UN, “We do not see this as the door closing on Eritrea, but on the contrary, we view this as another opportunity for Eritrea to play a more responsible and constructive role in the region. We did not come to this decision with any joy – or with anything other than a desire to support the stability of peace in the region. “ |
