9/18:  The Bloodied and The Bloody-Handed
By Awate Team - Sep 18, 2006, 05:23 PST
Eritreans in Eritrea are blameless. But those in Diaspora who participated in PFDJ meetings to pass condemnatory resolutions without seeing any evidence—and those who chose to be silent--are as bloody-handed as those who ordered the arrests. And until they recant and correct themselves, there will be no justice in Eritrea.

EDA: How To Break The Stalemate
By The Awate Team - Jun 6, 2006, 07:48 PST
This is the question facing those who support the EDA, an opposition umbrella group that rightfully believes that the only way to defeat tyranny is by tying resources end-to-end but has, in the process, created so many knots it finds itself in a virtual paralysis. This issue of the Pencil will deal with one suggestion of making the EDA a leaner, more effective organization.

Strengthening the EDA
By The Awate Team - Apr 13, 2006, 15:05 PST
Our emphasis today, is of the changes that the EDA must undertake—changes in its bylaws, it charter, and in its electoral process.  We hope the EDA will accept these recommendations in the spirit that they are being delivered—constructive input from those who wish to strengthen the Alliance and to succeed in its efforts to attract more Eritreans to its cause: bringing justice, democracy and political pluralism to Eritrea.

What is With Ethiopia’s Rulers?
By The Awate Team - Apr 4, 2006, 08:29 PST
A considerable number of the Eritrean opposition members are beginning to doubt the intentions of the Ethiopian government regarding the future of Eritrea – could the EPRDF be considering their trust as naiveté! It is difficult to imagine that the EPRDF is not aware of its blunders - political blunders that would cause squirms from the most trusting.

Isaias Regime's UNDiplomacy: Pursuing A Policy of Brinkmanship
By Awate Team - Jan 2, 2006, 00:01 PST
The international community’s reluctance to compel Ethiopia to accept and implement the EEBC ruling is not governed just by geo-political considerations.  The abysmal diplomacy of the Isaias regime contributed to the development of a situation where Eritrea’s only friends are outlaw governments like that of Libya... Eritrea has to either wait for the brinkmanship policy of the Isaias regime (proxy wars in Ethiopia) to prevail or, conversely, for the Eritrean people to, at long last, relieve Eritrea of the PFDJ.

The March To War
By Awate Team - Nov 4, 2005, 09:02 PST
...a political crisis that may create a “perfect storm”: an emboldened opposition refusing to settle for half-a-loaf of bread and pursuing a policy of destabilization as well as a donor nation group that has demoted Meles Zenawi from his African saint status. This may have convinced Isaias that this is the right time to strike—start something and wait for the Ethiopian opposition to finish it.

Bartering Liberty for Stability
By The Awate Team - Sep 25, 2005, 21:54 PST
But now, perhaps because the burden of unilateralism is unbearable or perhaps because the Eritrean agenda is so low in the list of priorities it is almost invisible, it appears that US foreign policy (State and Defense) has opted for coddling a dictator. For liberal democratic (small d) Eritreans, it appears that Eritrea is stuck in the never land between the foolish persistence of the State Department, the ill-informed ideology of the Defense Department and the naiveté of some journalists.
