Cadres for Holy Men; Containers for Churches

demonstrating against the intention of the patriarch to sell the Stifanos Church, the one smack in the middle of Meskel Square. One person authoritatively said, ‘ere guuuud, abunu bete-krstian lekatolik lishetut new blewal tebale? Endie!’ I thought that was serious and wanted more information, ‘for how much?’ I asked. ‘enye’nja, gn bzu n’w tebale, Vatikan ykeflal tebale’.
Walking With A Purpose

There is a lot you can do in these centers – you can hear numbers being called and play bingo. You can drink yourself to a stupor. You can hold playing cards close to your face as if you are reading the signature on a postage stamp. You can watch Eri-TV and watch indentured servants carrying rocks. Imagine how beautiful it must be to bury your conscience and laugh in reaction to any bad news.
Mobokkorria following Mokria

There are two intriguing traditions in parts of our culture. Qletuni and Zrrefa7. Though Zrrefa is not tolerated by the society anymore; the howling of young girls to Sawa is just that. Zrrefa was (and is) a straightforward social phenomenon: you spot a beautiful young girl, you kidnap her, and you declare her your bride. Families would helplessly lament: Tezzerifa endya! End of story. Qletuni is different.
Noise, Addis Ababa And Tsetserat

The mother and the sister were shocked. Like a cruel stab, the news, delivered in the most demeaning manner, must have pierced through their hearts. They were just stunned and tears started to accumulate and flow from their eyes. But that is not all; it gets worse!
Gira Kebira, Gira Seqira

At this juncture of our struggle against oppression, we have three groups of Eritreans: those who support the oppressive regime; those who are neutral; and those who oppose it. Actually there is a fourth group, a product of cross-breeding between a few opposition and a few neutral elements. An oxymoron? Not really. It is a sort of an eco- friendly vehicle that consumes more gas than a jumbo jet!
Crossed Over and Met Seyoum

Seyoum is fine; he has gained some weight though. He said, “It is all this sitting under a tree drinking lots milk and honey”. I had shouted “Salamat Harestay” when I came closer. He looked over his shaft-eye-glasses that I never knew he smuggled through to the other world. He was obviously surprised to see me and stood up to welcome me. I could see the faces around were not happy- I interrupted the joke he was telling.
Hade-Hade ‘ske beluni

who know they are playing with fire, who know they are doing something wrong, yet, they believe the only tool they have to stay in power is to ignite sectarian and regional sensitivities. These are led by the grand Capo of the PFDJ and his disciples- opportunists who want to be able to travel to Eritrea with loads of condoms to indulge in pedophilia; buy other peoples’ property that the PFDJ confiscated;
Ethiophiles & Ethiophobes
By Saleh Gadi - Jan 10, 2006, 01:00 PST
He is not even interested in Tigray anymore- he looks deeper South to the high plateaus of Shoa which he first aspired to rule through the Tigray surrogate and when that failed, he wants to rule it through the surrogate power of the KINIJIT, the “new darling” Ethiopian opposition. Now, as a precaution, a fall back plan, he is planing to rule it through the Oromo in case the KINIJIT fails to deliver.
