An Appeal to the UN & the USA
On behalf of Eritrean Prisoners of Conscience
Whereas Eritrean prisoners of conscience have been languishing in jails for years without charges and denied of visitation rights;
Whereas conscious Eritreans and friends of Eritrean are committed to publicize the plight of the prisoners of conscience;
Whereas, the marchers want to appeal to the UN to set an International Commission to investigate the conditions of Eritreans prisoners of conscience.
Whereas the marchers want to appeal to USA congress to take punitive measure against the government that has been imprisoning dissenters, journalists and others for many years.
On Friday, August 18, 2006, a group of Eritreans under the leadership of Samuel, Tekle and Dania will present a letter of appeal to the UN secretary general, Mr. Kofi Anan at the UN Headquarters. Upon delivering the letter, the Marchers will head for the Liberty Statue from which they will start the 265 mile trip on foot to Washington, DC.
So far, some Eritreans and friends of Eritrea have decided to join the marchers others have shown interest in joining. Names of those who want to join is listed below (will be updated regularly).
The journey is divided into several stations. Those who cannot march the whole distance can join part of the march that are suitable to them. Interested individuals should e-mail their intention to join the march indicating their joining stations so that the march can be coordinated.
The route of the March and timetable can change slightly if need for that arise. At the moment, the schedule and the route is planned as follows:
