"A conspiracy is everything that ordinary life is not. It’s inside game, cold sure, undistracted, forever closed off to us. All conspiracies are the same taut story of men who find coherence in some criminal act." Don Delillo

"The world is governed by very different personages from what it is imagined by those who are not behind the scenes" Benjamin Disraeli

Introduction

When citizen know that there is a power somewhere organized, so subtle, so watchful, so interlocked, so pervasive, they speak in condemnation below their breath. Observance of these instances are all too well documented in Eritrea’s case. It is important then, to understand the hubristic role and deception played in the destruction of our nation and it’s inhabitant. Though reviewing the matter can be painful, it is worthwhile to bring into light things that went wrong as the consequence of continued public ignorance so readily duped by those who are in power.

Usually, conspirators are cruel in their vengeance, tenacious in their purposes, and impenetrable in their dis-semblances. Most importantly, they are animated by profound and hidden hatred with an ever-present conspiracy toward domination. The archival data of human history always reminds us, that man is born under the yoke, grows beneath the oppressions of his age, and against him are every selfish passion of individuals. The Eritrean people’s history reflects and contains images and reality of the above nature as part of human destiny for which we are failed to avoid from the beginning.

When the body of our politics does not heal itself from conspiracy, the ailment usually represents a deeper wounding in our souls, and with it, the loss of an essential balance of the integral parts that holds the fabric of our society. Far away, watching our people in a culture wounded by war, intricately divorced from the calmness of the natural world, vanquished by the tough lock of

security - the diasporic Eritrean people failed miserably to question the issues that prolonged the nation’s ailment and the perpetual sorrows of our nationals inside Eritrea.

As a means of transformation and ecstasy balances of the inevitable pain, let us discover to what may be hidden in the dark shadows of Eritrean politics of conspiracy. In order to understand the conspiracy, it is necessary to have some rudimentary knowledge of regional and international politics also known as geopolitics. Therefore I believe that, it is relevant to the public interest to unfold the direct and tacit conspiracy in the national Eritrean politics. In doing so, I do not have either the intentions to flare up the conflict of the so called contending of the power mongers, nor do I have to escape from solution seeking. But simply to aware the public about the secret scene of conspiracy.

A crises of our own creations

More than 44 years after the creation of army struggle for independence, and more than 14 years after the creation of sovereign state of Eritrea, the de facto Eritrean government and the opposition camps lacks a coherent strategy and means to realize the Eritrean national aspirations. The failure of leadership in both camps has left the Eritrean people in the terrible predicament they now face. At some point in our history and in the making of the nationhood of Eritrea, these leaders must be judged by their ability to carry out "the goals they set for themselves." However, it is true or sometimes logic or otherwise .... some one has to expect that these goals could evolve overtime, in some cases tailored by circumstances in a more inclusive and pragmatic directions. Equally, the Eritrean common people deserve a large share of the responsibility for our tragic predicament. We failed to influence and condition our leaders with insights and use our leverage to dictate to a political compromise for the sake of unity and stability of our nation. Instead, a political culture of "grievances and avoidance of responsibility" has become the Eritreans’ operating software of mind.

Today, the situation is worse than ever. Mostly Issayas’s real transgression grew up from our willingness to allow his monopoly of power and his institutions of violence in the Eritrean society to dissipate and acquiesce in. The Eritrean peoples’ power has morphed into no authority and powerless grievances. The crises facing the nation and it’s people is largely and squarely brought about by our own hand, and we must resolve it. Perhaps, after these all setbacks and painful political journey, and in the process of increased engagement of the young generation, one has to hope the emergence of real politics that will press for fundamental change, pragmatism, and peacemaking. Given the cacophony of Eritrean voices, the inevitable exit of the dictator, and the unfitting current leadership of the opposition camp.....whatever change occurs is likely to be excruciatingly slow. We have to stop the internal Eritrean conflict from grinding on inexorably eroding the possibilities of conflict-ending solutions. Such is the fate reserved for our people wether on the side of the government or the side of the opposition......bungle or pass up the rare moment of opportunity that history provides us.

Conspiracy creates a despot & it’s state machine

Despots come to power by conspiracy. They grab power by clever surprise tactics of semi-swindling tricks. They regulate mechanically all the actions of the political life of their subjects by withdrawing one by one all liberties and humanities. They direct individuals and the general population by means of cleverly manipulated theory, verbiage, and all sorts of other quirks that belong to the specialists of their elites brain. They discredit the public in the eyes of the unthinking mob, while they themselves all in all have kept their secret organization in the shade. Their power are secured from danger by the discord existing among the social groups in their specific domain. In fact, they set one against another on personal basis and misguided national goals .The principal object of despots is to debilitate the public mind by criticism and distract the forces of the mind towards sham fight of empty cloquance.

If we depict the characteristics of despots as stated above , it clearly exhibit the characteristics of our despot in Asmara. His disdainful act of instigating discordance among our social groups; his effort to disarm our populace mentally and materially,..... to use them to his advantage to quench the extension of his power among other thing is well established and is an eloquent proof of modern despots. He assumes to himself the liberal physiognomy of all modern liberal thinking in all directions. In order to put the public opinion into his hand, he brought a state of bewilderment by giving speeches from all sides with many contradictory opinions to make the public lose their minds, and expect from them to see that the best thing is to have no opinion of any kind in matters of politics. Remember the words echoed by some educated groups who serve the despot....... " I have decided not to speak against my government" a statement that goes to history book for good or bad to depict the nature of human betrayal.

The speeches of our despot are not given to the public to understand, because they are understood only by him who guides the public....this being as his first secret of his conspiracy. His second secret conspiracy for the success of his power over our population is to multiply national failings and worsening conditions of civil life to the extent that it will be impossible for anyone to know where he/she is in the current chaos, ...... so that the people in consequence fail to understand one another. These measures of conspiracy will also serve him to dislocate all collective forces which are unwilling to submit to him and to discourage any kind of personal initiative which might in any degree hinder his affair. In all his possible way.....develop the significance of his ultimate government by presenting himself as the protector and benefactor of all those who voluntarily submit to him.

Our despot is also in a position to respond to every act of opposition by war including with our neighbors which dare to oppose him. The principal factor in the secrecy of his political diplomacy becomes " his word should not agree with deeds of the diplomat "..... refer to the un diplomatic political languages he use with the international communities ( UN, USA, EU.....etc)

Un holly alliance is " the politics of conspiracy"

Badme and it’s environs was liberated from Ethiopian occupation by ELF during the national army struggle. It was well known and documented back in the 70s, that TPLF started to claim Badme and it’s environs based on traditional Ethiopian control rather on the basis of Ethio-Eritrean colonial treaty. To it’s credit ELF opted dialogue to resolve the severed relationship between the two organizations. As an outcome of the dialogue, "a memorandum of agreement" was signed by the two leaders of the organizations leaving the outstanding positions to the final stage of the revolution. The conditions of the agreement allowed ELF to retain control on Badme and it’s environs but to withdraw and leave Shiraro for TPLF control. Besides, each organization maintain the right to conduct political and organizational activities within it’s nationals in the respective controlled areas by both organizations. This was done to diffuse the tensions and avert any military conflict.. Unobtrusively from the background, EPLF exploited the severed relationships of ELF-TPLF to it’s advantage. EPLF forged an alliance to expel ELF from the field, thereby dominated the Eritrean political arena. Following the joint EPLF-TPLF attack against ELF, the contested area was left officially for TPLF under the undisclosed conspiratorial agreement of the two organization. Now, history is challenging us to deal with all the consequences.

Indeed, the Eritrean struggle was genuine popular movement, and it was a just struggle for self determination and national independence. Thanks to the heroic deeds of our martyrs who actualize by their sacrifices. As the public has lately learned about the political reality of our nation, Issayas and his cliques had their own agenda of power, who knew from the outset very well, that they could not attain their goal without riding the revolutionary horse of that time. Of course behind the scene, outside forces (forces of geopolitical instructors) have contributed to the success of EPLF including EPRDF to have the upper hand of political dominance in their respective political arena.

Because of the new world arrangement of economic development, US and it’s allies were looking for both countries to play a specific role in the region. It was obvious then, that the nature of EPLF-TPLF alliance was based on narrow organizational interests and political expediency. There was not an element of equal partnership, mutual respect, and freedom of decision making in the basic concept and spirit of making their alliance. Hence, therein lies a danger with the new assignment on the region that brings them at odds, and even some of us saw it as ingredient of potential conflict. The competition for political power in the region becomes imminent. This created un wanted negative development at least for those who were playing behind the scene. Keep in mind these two political forces ( EPLF and EPRDF) Carry dual political traits " enemy and friend "..... a political traits that plays the role of " dominant and recessive " in the nature of their political relationships. What this means is that, when the factors of enmity is masked by the factors of friendliness their friendship becomes dominant and their enmity recessively subdued or vise versa , base on the objective pointers and principal of their motives. History recalls that there were time of enmity and time of friendship in their un balanced relationships. Clearly there are also historical markers in terms of their reversible moods ( 1981, 1984, 1988, 1998). These years are the turning point in their relationships for good and bad.

From the international community stand, particularly US and EU, soon after independence accepted the authority in Eritrea as a potential ally in the horn of Africa, with a hidden agenda that contradict with the international law. In fact they have contributed to the ascendence of absolute power in the state of our nation. They have exalted Issayas as exemplary democrat by giving a blind eye to the human rights violation perpetuated by his government against our people. The international community including UN, knowing the track record of the regime failed to apply a meaningful pressure to abide him with the international law during OAU efforts in the Ethio-Eritrean border saga. They rather inclined to secure the roles and assignment given to him than the plight of our people in the reckless war. These miscalculated geopolitical approach spearheaded within the walls of secrecy had a lot to do with the prolongation of suffering of our people.

Badme the symbol of conspiracy in Eritrean politics

Secret activities are always inimical to free society. The doctrine of conspiracy constitute three components.... " claim everything, explain nothing, and deny everything." The EPFDJites have adopted and perfected the same technique to a varying degree to maintain ironclad control over the life of our people. They made Badme as the pivotal of " the conspiracy battle" to control and claim every aspect of life of the Eritrean people.

Since 1981 Badme claimed the entire resources and lives of our people. It became the cause of forming alliances and switching alliances..... fully directed to the destruction of human beings and protection of the throne who are in power. We know the old alliance EPLF/TPLF now EPRDF including the obscene and occult practice is aborted as a waste of history. Yet Badme called for another new alliances to continue it’s symbolic significance in the politics of conspiracy. The realignment of EPFDJ/KINEJIT and EPRDF/EDA is another detour of history of conspiracy. The Eritrean People should not and would not expect good thing from these alliances. Look at " KINEJIT."...... this group does not even recognize the sovereignty of Eritrea, and yet EPFDJ opted to establish a full fledged diplomatic relation to over throw EPRDF. On the other hand EPRDF does not believe Badme as part of the sovereign Eritrea even after the final and binding Agreement of Algiers and the EEBC verdict...but yet EDA opted to maintain united front with EPRDF. In my view, here are just a few of the factual, verifiable, and imminent conspiratorial threats to our nation at this crucial time.

  • Repeating the deadly pattern of history:- The 1981 policy "The enemy of enemy is my fiend" is continuing as I have stated the nature of the alliance above. The Eritrean people should be mindful what negative impact can ensue from these alliances.

  • Supporting to our deadly enemy:- Our deadly enemies at this historical juncture are those groups or nations who sabotage the sovereignty of our statehood . KINEJIT is the hostile enemy for the statehood of Eritrea. The Eritrean people should be watchful to this un holy alliance. The political intrigues and complexity that might cascade out of this alliance is detrimental to the survival and sovereignty of our nation.

  • The fallacy of negative proof:- It is wrong and apolitical for EDA to project unreal self- image as to their strength and support of the public to their platform. EDA has to correct it’s strategic alliance and it’s political process towards the affinity of our general population. Telling about the obvious failure of the regime is not a political progress. Winning the hearts and soul of our people is the real progress and nothing is done about that. Dissociating from advocating the implementation of the final and binding of EEBC rule about the border demarcation still remains and shines as the scar of their policy. They have to be reminded that, pushing the implementation of the border verdict in the international community does not even remotely be interpreted as a compromise with the policy of EPFDJ. If EDA has unflinching stand to the EEBC rule, let them show to the public when they are knocking the political house of the international community to promote peace by asking the immediate implementation of the border demarcation. However, I agree with those who pronounce that, demarcation will not bring peace as far as the two governments are not engaged into dialogue to bring peace. While I concur my feeling with that inferential idea, I still believe sincerely that, bringing the border conflict to the end-solution will remove some of the obstacles that divided the Eritrean public in the struggle of democracy. Therefore, EDA must avoid any diplomatic expedition that affect exorbitantly it’s image and goal.

  • The scene of the crime:- History pointed and verified Badme as the major crime scene of conspiracy. The majority Eritrean people this way or that, have collaborated with the regime to funnel the 1998 war instead of opposing and looking other peaceful means. Remember when the regime advocated as the "war for justice" at the onset of the crises and "meaningless and senseless" at the sunset of the crises of management of the war. The public could not pick up the often contradictory messages of the leaders and question their credibility. Alas the public’s quietism, indirectly helped the reign of terror and increase the problem of our nation exponentially. Still the clouds of war are hanging over Badme. However, this time the public have learned through the hardest way and are fully aware, that we can not afford any kind of war. That is a welcome stream of conscience.
  • Camouflaging the peace process:- Badme has never been the cause of enmity of the two regime in Ethiopia and Eritrea, but they preferred it to be as the camouflaged reason of their conflict. The inherent interference of the international forces with their current objectives to regionalize Africa for the purpose of economic and political development, has generated the inevitable competition for political and economic hegemony in the horn. From the beginning their alliance was to secure their political stability knowing that, at some point the relationship will be drifted to un predictable direction....... which nobody from the general public foresee that both brotherly people will be ended up to the current insurmountable problem. "Badme village" unlike "Badme region" has no any symbolic significance either politically or economically. However, while we know the pull and push of the war including the cost of human life and resources , both government still look their success on who owns the flashy point Badme village. No one can redeem from the decadence of their political journey and escape from accountability for that matter. The secret of their criminal enterprise will be unfold and buried once for all in the near future.

Conclusion

Now more than ever, I feel imperative that we must take a hard look and put the pieces together to study the pattern and material evidence of the ongoing human abuse on the one hand and the alarm of national security on the other. These two problems can not be treated or handled separately one after the other, instead it requires simultaneous bifocal approach converged into one strategy. Those who tried to prioritize one issue from the other as we heard from the opposition camp is not sincere as it look nor does it help them to the success of their strategy. The security of the nation is at risk due to the reckless and irresponsible government we have. Removing the government does not mean that we will have a responsible alternative ready on the scene to keep on check the security of our nation. The opposition camp should be frank about their reality. So far, like the Cassandra’s unheard cries, our warning are ignored.
