Two weeks after being admitted in a London hospital, Abdella Idris Mohammed, leader of the ELF, is said to be in stable condition. Abdella was rushed to hospital in critical conditions and operated on after suffering from a seizure. His doctors have advised him to avoid stress and not to receive guests. Over the last two months, Abdella has visited Australia, Germany, Syria and England; he has also traveled many times between Sudan and Ethiopia.
Abdella Idris who arrived in London two weeks ago to participate in the September 1st celebrations with the Eritrean community there, could not attend the celebration that was held yesterday night. Other leaders of the ELF including Dr. Yohannes Zeremeriam, the ELF’s director of foreign affairs, and invited guests gave speeches in the event.
In his speech, Dr. Yohannes talked of a peaceful struggle to dislodge the Eritrean regime, a view considered new to the views held by many organizations of the traditional opposition who believe in armed struggle.
Abdella Idris who is also the Chairman of the Eritrean National Alliance (ENA), an umbrella opposition organization which groups over a dozen Eritrean organizations and individuals, has no deputy in the ENA structure. Herui Bairu is the secretary of the ENA.
The secretariat of the ENA is expected to hold its yearly meeting next October. Insiders informed Gedab News that the illness of its chairman could affect the ENA adversely and "it is time the ENA reformed its structure to depend on institutions instead of individuals".
Meanwhile a branch of the ELF-RC led by Dr. Beyene Kidane has formally applied to activate its membership in the ENA. Observers believe the organization will formally rejoin the ENA in the October meeting.
