Gedab News has learned that Ermias Debessai (Papayo), a veteran combatant of the EPLF who was jailed for years after being tried in a special court set by the PFDJ has been released today in Asmara.

Ermias Debessai was serving as Eritrea’s ambassador to China before he was summoned to Eritrea by president Isaias and later jailed under dubious circumstances. Ermias was not presented to a courtroom for over three years but later, when he became the focus of many campaigners and after much public pressure, the PFDJ put him in front of what is widely known as the ‘Special Court’ which many Eritreans consider a “kangaroo court” and he was sentenced to seven years in jail.

Meanwhile Gedab News learned that the EPLF-DP is “making strident progress towards its organizational structure”. With many veteran fighters and senior cadres who abandoned their government posts joining its ranks, the EPLF-DP has been organizing its structure on the branch level around the world.

Recently, the head of the EPLF-DP, Mesfin Hagos, stated that he is very pleased with the progress he has seen so far specially in the UK, Sweden and Germany.

A few months ago, the EPLF-DP gained permission to operate in the Sudan and currently, an envoy of the EPLF-DP Mohammed-Nur Ahmed, is visiting the Sudan. He is expected to look into the operational details of the organization and make contacts with members as well as with leaders of other opposition organizations.

Our sources indicated that Mesfin Hagos will preside over a meeting that will be convened in preparation for a bigger organizational meeting of the EPLF-DP.
